Much before the first tooth breaks through the gums, bacteria forms in your baby’s mouth from sugar in the formula or breast milk. The sugar stays on your baby’s gums and produces bacteria. It is important to prevent bacteria from forming as this can cause dental problems. It’s prudent to begin brushing the baby’s emerging teeth and gum from 6 months.
It’s also important to remember that you must not allow your baby to fall asleep with a bottle of milk or juice. When a baby falls asleep drinking fluids, it remains in the mouth longer, leading to an increase in bacterial growth.
